Does the external voltage monitor provide benefits?

I had to relocate the ML this morning to clear the leaves off the driveway. Upon returning the vehicle to its parking area, I saw that the gauge was stuck in the battery voltage mode, which occurs when the battery voltage remains below 13 volts; it was displaying 12.3 volts. I sat there for a minute, revving the engine, but the alternator never activated. Retrieved my volt-ohm meter to verify it at the battery. While observing it, the voltage increased from 11.7 volts to 14.3 volts. Upon inspecting the vehicle, it was confirmed that the pressure was being checked; the gauge is functioning correctly. Interestingly, the dashboard light never illuminated.
I would never have realized that my alternative may be failing if I had not glanced down.

For the time being, I will refrain from intervention and monitor it closely. Should that occur again. I may purchase a regulator as a precautionary measure.

Ensure that the light activates while the key is in position 2, prior to starting the engine. The indicator activates just when the belt fails, provided the engine is operational.

In your situation, the dashboard light did not illuminate when the charging system failed, despite having a different alternator. Witek previously elucidated the functionality of the charging dash light, however I can longer recall the details.
I had same symptoms; the charge got sporadic for many days before it ultimately ceased functioning. It was ultimately a single brush hung. You could be experiencing the same journey.

I cannot assert with certainty, but I believe I would have seen the dashboard light not illuminating prior to startup. Otherwise, everything seems to be functioning normally.
